Biodynamic farming is a song, an organic sound coming out of the earth preaching harmony. It’s natural music, not some sort of electronic or synthetic sound, it is an acoustic tune pulsing to the rhythms of the earth. There are many instruments that are placed together to harmonize with each other and create the phrase, the rhythm, that biorhythm that amplifies life from the earth. It’s those rhythms that the farmer fine tunes, and conducts and orchestrates with the stars, and produces a musical sentence within all of the fruit of the land. It is this process that creates the extraordinary nourishment of the Biodynamic fruit. The performance of the fruit is the reflection of the vintage. It tells the story of the place, containing all of the high points and lows, the wind and the rainfall, the heat of the day, the cold of the night, and the movement of the cosmos above. This musicality becomes pure energy for the consumer, and resonates in the mind, body, and soul.

The Biodynamic farm is viewed as one organism and arranged with biodiversity. There are special herbs and flowers placed in areas to attract desired bugs, which will enrich the soil. Then, there are other kinds of plants, which are worked into the environment to keep undesirables and pests away from the fields. Also, certain birdhouses are erected to attract the right kind of predators to eat the bad bugs and pests, which can cause damage to the crops.

The plants and animals upon the Biodynamic farm nourish each other. In some ways, the energy of the farm never really leaves. The animal’s manure is turned to compost, and used to create the bed for cover crops, which will generate more energy for the plants. There are certain teas and flowers, which are mixed with water, and sprayed on the farm to regenerate the land. There are special Biodynamic preparations that are created in a cow horn, which is buried in the earth. These preparations are fermented in the soil over the course of some months, then are mixed with water and sprayed on the farm as a fertilizer, and for disease prevention. All of this recycling of the earth’s energy acts like an incense or some sort of a magnet pulling the energy from deep within the earth up to the crust, harmonizing and enriching the soil.

The conventional farm uses chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and treats each problem with a different chemical compound. It is like straining the sound in order to cover the flaw. It is a way of manipulating the earth, and in the short term might produce some results. In the long term, it strips the land of nutrients. Chemical weed killers don’t really kill the weeds. They kill the soil containing the weed. Which in turn, delivers the desired results. So, imagine what that does when all of those little microcosms of dead earth, mix with the rest of the soil. The fruit or crops, which are produced, are out of tune with the earth. It is out of balance, and has lost the melody. The poison enters the surviving plants, and even in the smallest of doses is transmitted through the produce to the consumer.

We are also part of the song, which comes out of the earth. I believe that staying in tune with what we eat, we can prevent disease in ourselves by working holistically rather than treating each individual problem with some unnatural chemical, just like a Biodynamic farm. Our song can be more in tune by eating Biodynamic foods and drinking biodynamic wines.

The more I tune in, the better I am for it.
